Am 12. Januar 2010 werden Vampire Weekend mit ihrem neuen Album "Contra" um die Ecke biegen. Der Anfang Oktober diesen Jahres veröffentlichte Song "Horchata" lässt auf verstärkte elektronische Einflüsse beim Nachfolger zum selbstbetitelten und international hofierten Debüt (2008 über XL Recordings erschienen) vermuten. The Ruby Suns, Animal Collective oder El Guincho lassen herzlich grüßen.
Vielleicht hat eine etwaige Elektrifizierung aber auch etwas mit den Umtrieben von Keyboarder Rostam Batmanglij zu tun. Der hat nämlich im Juli 2009 gemeinsam mit Wes Miles von Ra Ra Riot sein elektronisches Projekt Discovery mit dem Debüt „LP“ präsentiert.
Die seit gestern im Netz befindliche Single "Cousins" zeigt hingegen, dass der mit zackigen Surf-Gitarren und polyrhythmischem Geklimper begonnene Weg, wohl auch 2009 konsequent weitergegangen wird. Wenn auch mit etwas komplexeren Song-Strukturen und mehr Spiel- bzw. Experimentierfreude. Süßer die Glocken nie klingen also.
Auch der dazugehörige, gewohnt spaßig montierte Musikvideoclip zeugt von vielen kreativen Ideen. Das Interesse gegenüber der anstehenden Veröffentlichung wäre damit jedenfalls gefördert.
